After two years of disruption by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mobile World Congress (MWC) returned on Monday, February 28 with leading global technology providers converging in Barcelona, Spain to be part of what has been termed the deepest technology revolution in human history.

The four-day trade show officially kicked off at 7 a.m. Monday with global mobile operators, device manufacturers, technology providers, and vendors putting their best foot forward to showcase their latest undertakings in the world of technology.

A spot check by Citizen Digital which is attending the global event, paints a picture of the critical role that the building of 5G network is expected to play in lighting up the future.

Technology providers we spoke to led by Chinese multinational Huawei, are committed to building 5G networks with energy efficiency, which they believe will boost the digital transformation of industries and in turn accelerate global economic growth.

According to Mr. Paul Scanlan, Chief Technology Officer, Huawei Carrier Group Education, Healthcare and jobs are the key areas where 5G is playing a profound role that should be globally embraced.

“5G is growing very fast since the ecosystem, which is the devices, is being developed very quickly… We need to educate everybody what 5G can do for society,” said Scanlan.

Speaking at the sidelines of the event, Scanlan called for a more concerted effort between tech industry stakeholders, including governments, for the building of 5G.

He underscored the need for governments especially in developing countries to loosen the tight hold on the network spectrum as well provide conducive environments for collaborations with technology developers to allow for efficient network building.

From a fully-connected smart factory, to a barman and cyber dog, the increasing reliability of 5G is clearly evident from the epic display of technology at seven halls set up at the Fira de Barcelona Gran Via, where the event takes place.

Major exhibitors at the event include; Amazon, Google, Huawei, Samsung, Nokia, Microsoft, Vodafone, IBM, Telefónica, among many others.

The summit continues until Thursday, March 28
