Broadcasting and Telecommunications Principal Secretary (PS), Stephen Isaboke, EBS is rooting for harmonization and enhancement of cross border postal services on the continent.

Isaboke reiterated the importance of the postal service, when he opened the second edition of the Universal Postal Union Africa Postal Leaders Forum in Nairobi.

The two day conference, themed β€œExploring new regulatory models for cultivating competitive markets” brought together Post Master Generals and stakeholders in the postal sector from different parts of Africa.

They met to deliberate on the future of postal services in Africa.

Speaking on behalf of the Cabinet Secretary, William Kabogo Gitau, the PS reiterated that the sector plays an important role in the socio-economic fabric of the continent.

β€œBy leveraging its existing network and trusted reputation, the postal sector can indeed contribute to the attainment of key aspects of African Union’s Agenda 2063,” Isaboke said.

He noted that postal policy makers, leaders and regulators must, therefore, use the forum to have honest conversations on the regulatory, legal and policy changes that are necessary to put the post in Africa on the path to sustainability and growth.

β€œA working post is good for Africa’s growth and prosperity,” he said.

The Kenyan Government has taken deliberate steps to revitalize the Posta service.

To re-orient the post for last-mile delivery and e-commerce, the government has developed the National Addressing System and the supporting policy and other legal instruments.

Others present in the conference include John Tanui, the Post Master General; David Mugonyi, the Director General of Communications Authority of Kenya alongside Mary Mungai, the Chairperson of the Board.

Sifundo Chief Moyo, the Secretary General Pan-African Postal Union; Masahiko Mutoki, the Director General of the UPU; and CEOs and Leaders of the sector are also attending the conference.

The forum is a high-level gathering that brings together postal sector leaders, government officials, and key stakeholders from across the African continent.

Its goal is to foster dialogue, collaboration, and strategic planning to enhance postal services and drive socio-economic development through modern, inclusive, and innovative postal systems.

The forum addresses key challenges such as digital transformation, financial inclusion, cross-border e-commerce, and infrastructure development.

By uniting leaders under the UPU’s global framework, the forum plays a critical role in shaping policies and initiatives that support the growth and sustainability of postal services in Africa.
